The Open Championship, commonly known as The Open or British Open, is the oldest of the four men's major golf championships and is held annually on a links course in the United Kingdom. The other three majors are the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. Open Championship is sometimes called the "home of golf" because it was first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, where the game originated. The Championship was originally called "The Open" but was renamed "The Open Championship" in 1920. The venue for the Championship rotates among a group of ten links courses, eight in Scotland and two in England. The Championship is organized by The R&A, the governing body for golf outside the United States and Mexico. The Open is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world and is considered to be the most challenging of the four majors. The winner of the Championship is awarded the Claret Jug, one of the most iconic trophies in golf.
