Germany's Alexander Zverev defeated Karen Khachanov of the Russian Olympic Committee 6–3, 6–1, to win the gold medal in Men's Singles tennis at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Zverev and Khachanov were first male medalists for their countries in men's tennis singles since Tommy Haas (silver) and Yevgeny Kafelnikov (gold) at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Zverev also became Germany's first gold medalist in tennis men's singles. In the bronze medal match, Pablo Carreño Busta of Spain defeated Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 6–4, 6–7(6–8), 6–3 and was Spain's first male medalist in tennis singles since Rafael Nadal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. 64 players from 31 nations competed.

Andy Murray was the two-time reigning champion, but withdrew before his first-round match due to a quadriceps strain.

World No. 1 Djokovic was attempting to complete the fourth part of a potential Calendar-Year Golden Slam, having already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon Championships in 2021, as well as being on a 22-match winning streak dating back to the Belgrade Open, but was eliminated by eventual champion Zverev in the semifinals.
